Guide · comparison pages
When a buyer searches "you vs rival" or "you alternatives", they are minutes from a decision, and our analysis of 1,001 high-intent SERPs found that 67% of "vs" searches and 84% of "alternatives" searches are won by a page the brand didn't write. A rival's spin, an affiliate's listicle, an aggregator. The same pages feed AI assistants when someone asks "should I use X or Y?". This playbook is drawn from the 274 "vs" winners we measured.
1. Get your page list from reality
Don't guess which comparisons matter, use the rivals AI and search actually put next to you. Your free scan names the competitors AI recommends instead of you; each one is a "you vs them" page. Add your own "alternatives to you" page, the intent you're least likely to own today (16% brand-owned).
2. Build each page like the winners build them
- Title carries the query: "You vs Rival: [honest frame]". 79% of winners have the intent token in the title; 74% use a superlative ("best for…"), earn it, don't just claim it.
- H1 close to the query, not stuffed, winners average a near-match, only 23% exact-match.
- An honest both-ways table early: features, pricing, support, who each product is genuinely better for. The page that reads fair is the page that gets cited.
- Say who should pick THEM. One section, real reasons. It's what separates a comparison from an ad, and it's the part AI quotes.
- CTA above the fold (76% of winners), a trial or demo link, not a popup.
- Visible "last updated" date you actually honour (33% of winners show one); a table of contents once it's long (19%).
- Schema: Article or WebPage is what winners use. FAQPage appeared on just 7%, add a short real FAQ block if useful (10% do), skip it otherwise. Never fake review stars on your own comparison.
3. The "alternatives" listicle is its own shape
For "alternatives to you", winners are numbered, dated roundups: 79% have a number in the title, 50% a year, 47% a visible update date. Write "7 YourBrand alternatives (and who they're right for)" yourself, name real competitors, be generous, state plainly where you're not the fit. Counter-intuitive and it works: you control the frame, you earn the citation, and AI learns the comparison from a page that includes you fairly.
4. Ship it, then make it findable
Link the pages from your footer or a /compare hub, submit them with IndexNow the day they go live (Bing's index is what ChatGPT search reads), and keep names consistent with the rest of your entity signals.
5. Measure whether it moved
Comparison visibility is measurable: re-scan after the pages land, and if you're on Pro, watch the "vs" questions in your weekly measure. Growth's rival share-of-voice shows the head-to-head trend directly.
