Busting Layoffs Myths, AirPods AI Magic, and SEQ Grants You Can't Miss

Another big week in the Sunshine Coasts vibrant ecosystem!

Another sunny SEQ morning here in Noosa, the kind where you grab a coffee and wonder how to squeeze more hours into the day without burning out. This week's buzzing with OpenAI's free livestreams (perfect if you're DIY-ing), that sneaky AirPods Live Translation upgrade (great for tourism), and a reminder that tech layoffs are mostly spreadsheet dramas, not robot takeover. Plus, those QLD grants are dropping soon, let's chat how to grab 'em before the rush.

TL;DR

Event — Cooroy Creates (FEATURED)

The AI Kickstarter: Unlocking Immediate Business Potential — Cooroy Chamber of Commerce 🗓 Wed 17 Sep · Cooroy (details/RSVP on the Chamber site) (cooroychamberofcommerce.com.au) You can book also through the Eumundi Chamber. (business.eumundichamber.com.au)

Post of the week — AirPods Pro 3 can LIVE translate

Apple confirmed Live Translation with rollout limits in the EU. Older AirPods models (Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC) also get it. Handy for frontline teams, tourism, and export. (The Verge)

Data visual — what the layoffs really look like

I graphed quarterly tech layoffs (2022→now)

Source: Layoffs.fyi

Why this matters for SMEs: the big spike was Q1-2023; since then, smaller waves. Most commentary ties cuts to pandemic over-hiring, higher rates, and “efficiency” resets, not AI “taking all the jobs.” (Industry Leaders Magazine)

Our take: “It’s not the robot— it’s the spreadsheet.” AI rarely _causes_ layoffs directly; it amplifies good (or bad) management. Research also shows layoffs often hurt performance over time (lost knowledge, morale, innovation). (Harvard Business Review)“ —

Evidence right now: Microsoft is cutting headcount while pouring tens of billions into AI/data-center spend—this is capital allocation, not wholesale AI replacement of staff. (Reuters)

And when firms over-cut, they quietly rehire: “boomerang” employees are now >25% of new hires in many datasets. (Harvard Business Review)

Meanwhile AI startups are showing the fastest growth in history

If you’re an owner/GM—how to get the upside (and avoid the mess)

  1. Pick one revenue-touching workflow (e.g., quote-to-invoice) and make a ChatGPT Project for it; drop 2–3 real files and define tone, data limits, and hand-off rules.
  2. Use the 4-agent pattern (Researcher → Writer → Critic → Finisher) to reduce rework without hiring. OpenAI’s docs show how to chain roles cleanly.
  3. Decide on DIY vs Workshop: Academy is excellent but time-heavy. If you want outcomes fast, book a 90–180 min High-Impact Workshop and we’ll leave you with a working prototype + a lightweight AI Opportunity Audit.

Reply “Workshop” for 2–3 scoped options with fixed pricing.
